A Study on the Job Analysis of the Optician in Hospital : Focusing on Importance and Needs of Education

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the needs for training and educational importance of the tasks performed by the opticians at hospitals and the tasks in relevant industries in order to obtain the basic data for the training the opticians with the job skills required by the industry.

Methods: From September 1st, 2017 to October 31st, 2017, we conducted a questionnaire survey for 73 male and female opticians working in ophthalmologic clinics nationwide.

Results: The main reason for opticians to seek a jobs of ophthalmic clinics was relatively the short working hours (68.5% for average working hours less than 8 hours per day, 41.4% for less than 40 hours of average working hours per week), and high number of respondents (77.8%) answered short working hours as the advantage of working at an ophthalmic clinic. For the optician¡¯s tasks, eye examination using ophthalmic examination equipment (27.2%) were the highest followed by refractive examination (24.9%), contact lens related tasks (13.0%), explanation and education on test results for patients (12.3%), surgical consultation (11.1%), surgery and medical care assistance (6.1%), and surgical equipment check (5.4%). The skills required at for the ophthalmic clinics was the highest for refractive examination (38.4%) followed by knowledge on eye diseases (28.8%), skills to handle various eye examination equipments (27.8%), contact lens related knowledge (2.7%) and understanding medical terminology (2.7%). Opticians who are mainly engaged in eye examination using ophthalmologic examination equipments thought the most importance task for on medical terminology (beta = 0.569) followed by ophthalmologic disease (beta = 0.517), refraction and visual function examination (beta = 0.380), skills to handle various eye examination equipments (beta = 0.408), eye surgery (beta = 0.330), and nursing practice (beta = 0.429) trainings. Opticians, whose main job is contact lenses, thought that they need more training in eye disease (beta = 0.371) and refraction and visualization examination (beta = 0.695).

Conclusions: The main reason for the opticians seeking to work in ophthalmologic clinics was the short working hours. Awareness of importance of educational, and the need of training were different according to the general characteristics of the opticians working at the hospital, the career of the optician, and the main task of the opticians.
